The Phonics Class and Phonics Sound Box

The Phonics Class and Sound Box lessons follow Montessori-style lesson plans that are designed to help young children learn and practice reading skills independently. The lesson plan included in the Sound Box Demo explains the teaching method for both products.

In the Sounds sections, Little Bear asks the question. If the student clicks on the "Help" button, he also gives the name of each object as the word appears above it. The student is given feedback vocally and visually after he answers the question.

The Phonics Sound Box

These multi-level manipulatives are designed for instruction in phonics, spelling, and syllabication. Sets of pictures and labels can be printed and laminated for use by an individual child or small groups. Use them for teaching, individualized work, practice, and testing. Each sound has at least 4 pictures and labels.

We have used the system described in The Writing Road to Reading to indicate the pronunciation and spelling rules for the words in the lessons. This system is also an effective tool for teaching spelling to older students.

The files on the Phonics Sound Box CD are in PDF format and can be used either on Windows or Mac machines.

Math Flash Cards

This interactive program helps very young children learn and practice the basic facts of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as number and fraction concepts. The Help button displays Montessori-type beads related to the problem as the program "counts" them. Watch a video sent in by a parent showing her child using the program.

The Math Class

This interactive program introduces and reinforces the concepts presented in textbooks for the primary grades. Randomly selected numbers are used throughout the program, insuring that each student gets a wide variety of unique problems. The problem solving sections provide a review of the specified concepts, and give students a chance to apply what they have learned.

The Progress Report (accessible from the File Menu on the Main Menu screen), helps you monitor your students' scores. The number of problems a student worked, the number answered correctly, and the percentage correct are displayed, as well as the student's ending level.

The Computer Record Sheet , included with The Math Class, provides a place for you to keep a written record of your students' current status as well as a list of all the concepts found in the product. The downloadable demo allows you or your student to try out the entire program.

Program Features

• The Hint Box appears for the first three problems in each section to help the student get off to a good start.

• The student can access a tutorial by clicking on the "Show Me" button at the beginning of any problem in the lower levels. Tutorials are not scored.

• In the Steps mode, full credit for a right answer is given if all the parts are correct.

• Positive feedback is always given with correct answers.

• If a student gets an incorrect answer, s/he may see the problem done correctly by clicking the "Show Me" button if it is available.

• Levels of difficulty have been added to the Math Class. The Progress report includes student's ending level of difficulty when s/he leaves a concept.

• Our worksheet generators and the Problem Solving Strategy Sheets are included. They provide a wide variety of worksheets to reinforce concepts in The Math Class.

Worksheet Generators

The worksheet generators print mathematics worksheets for a variety of concepts and problem solving topics. The size of the font and the number of problems on a page varies with the difficulty and anticipated age-level of the student. The worksheets may be used as timed tests, review lessons, and enrichment, as well as drill and practice.  These programs are included in our updated version of The Math Class.

The printable manipulatives for many primary math concepts come with complete instructions for making and using them. These manipulatives are based on Montessori principles and procedures. Many of them are computer generated versions of activities you would see in a Montessori classroom. This package has recently been updated to take advantage of improved pdf and printer formats.
